The Jane Austen novel was first published in 1815, a comedy of manners focusing on Emma Woodhouse, who can’t help herself from constantly meddling in the love affairs of others.
The film also marks the feature debut for director Autumn de Wilde, who is known primarily for her work in music videos for artists including Beck and Death Cab for Cutie. The Luminaries author Eleanor Catton wrote the script. Catton serves as the executive producer on the small screen adaptation of her award-winning novel.

Oscillating effortlessly between twisted gothic thrillers and refined period dramas, Anya Taylor-Joy has mapped out an unconventional career rooted in escapism. Now stepping into the shoes of Jane Austen’s timeless antiheroine Emma in a new screen adaptation, the actor speaks to us about why she’ s never compromised for less.
Within the first five minutes of meeting, Anya Taylor-Joy is excitedly telling me about the best first date she’s ever been on. “Our lunch turned into six, seven hours of us wandering around antique shops and just telling each other our entire life story.” She recalls the story animatedly, her stupendously large eyes trained on mine. “We fell in love! It was basically the best first date I’ve ever had.” I’m currently sat with the actress in the practically sub-zero temperatures of a studio’s storage room in the depths of south London. An eerie array of prop oddities including mannequin torsos and comically jumbo-sized clocks loom ominously in the shadows, as well as one boisterously orange vintage sofa – where eventually all her lithe, deer-like limbs fold into when we sit down for a chat. The “date” in question was her first ever work meeting with Autumn de Wilde, an esteemed fashion photographer and director who has just helmed the latest screen adaptation of Jane Austen’s iconic 19th-century set novel, Emma – in which Taylor-Joy stars in the titular role. It is a sprightly, humorous wedge of a film, offering up sheer screen escapism and swoon-worthy shows of romance — think strawberries and champagne, beguiling glances over group picnics, and petticoats abound — and boasting a number of fantastic performances from an ensemble cast made up of the crème de la crème of British talent, or as Taylor-Joy calls them, the “merry little gang” of Johnny Flynn, Mia Goth, Josh O’Connor, Callum Turner, Bill Nighy and Miranda Hart. What you see on screen is essentially what you get: the on-screen chemistry between everyone is real. Mia Goth is one of Taylor-Joy’s IRL best friends. And she snickers gleefully “it was so much fun to argue with Johnny Flynn,” the singer and actor who plays her bickering love interest. They’re all active on a group chat called ‘MA’ whose avatar is an emoji of the head exploding, where they “continually tell each other jokes and write poetry.” At its crux, Emma is about a spoilt “anti-heroine” who meddles in the lives of others around her, and plays matchmaker to less than favourable results for all those involved. “Emma is acting from a place of fear a lot of the time,” Taylor-Joy surmises. “A lot of her comments that come out are because she’s deeply lonely and bored, and she also doesn’t know any better. She’s grown up in a place of privilege where she believes that she’s truly being kind in trying to improve people, but I wanted people to understand where she was coming from when she does say something mean. I think that in a world that’s very big on cancel culture at the minute, it’s really nice to have a story on redemption, and by the end of the film Emma understands that morally she prefers to be around good people that treat each other kindly, rather than the people that are deceitful and happen to be of the right class.”

BREAKING: Robert Eggers, the director behind the critically acclaimed horror film, The Witch, has potentially assembled a starry cast for his latest project, The Northman, set up at New Regency. Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, The Witch’s Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Skarsgård, and Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe are in talks to star this film, which is being produced by Lars Knudsen (Hereditary, Midsommar).
The pic is described as Viking revenge saga set in Iceland at the turn of the 10th century. Eggers penned the screenplay with Icelandic poet and novelist, Sjón.
New Regency co-financed Eggers’ soon-to-be-released ghost drama The Lighthouse, also starring Dafoe as well as Robert Pattinson. The black and white feature was named best movie at Cannes’ Critics Week and Directors’ Fortnight by the International Federation of Film Critics.
During a recent appearance at Deadline’s The Contenders London, Eggers talked about how he and his brother Max were inspired by a true story of a 19th-century lighthouse in Wales where an older man and younger man are trapped due to a storm
“With the two characters, I realized it could be a story about identity,” remarked Eggers.
The Lighthouse will hit theaters Oct. 18.

Netflix has put out an order for a new limited series, “The Queen’s Gambit,” starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Variety has learned.
Based on Walter Tevis’s 1983 novel of the same name, the six-episode show will be set during the Cold War era and will follow orphan chess prodigy Beth Harmon (Taylor-Joy) from the age of eight to twenty-two, as she struggles with addiction in a quest to become the greatest chess player in the world.
Two-time Oscar nominee Scott Frank, who created the Netflix show “Godless” and wrote the screenplay for the 2017 movie “Logan,” will serve as writer, director, and executive producer on the series. “The Talented Mr Ripley” producer William Horberg will executive produce, alongside Allan Scott who will co-write the show.
Taylor-Joy, who is best known for playing Casey Cooke in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass” and “Split,” is repped by CAA, Troika, and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson. In 2015, she starred in the chilling horror film “The Witch.”
A film adaptation of “The Queen’s Gambit” was in the works in 2007, with Heath Ledger set to make his directorial debut and Ellen Page in line to star. However, the project was shelved after Ledger’s death in January, 2008.
Tevis’s other novels include “The Man Who Fell To Earth,” which has been adapted for both film and television, “The Hustler,” which was adapted into the 1961 movie starring Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason, and its sequel “The Color Of Money,” which was lossely adapted for the big screen in 1986 by Martin Scorsese.
Children of the ’80s are chomping at the bit for Netflix’s forthcoming Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance — and the all-star voice cast will add fuel to their excitement. Taron Egerton (the Kingsman films), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) have been set as respective Gefling heroes Rian, Brea and Deet, and other while actors including Helena Bonham-Carter, Toby Jones, Alicia Vikander, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg also lend their voices to the return of Jim Henson’s classic that will launch globally in 2019.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is based on Henson’s 1982 feature The Dark Crystal. The series tells a new epic story, set many years before the events of the movie and realized using classic puppetry with cutting-edge visual effects. We find that the world of Thra is dying. At the heart of Thra is the Crystal of Truth, a source of untold power. But it is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and a sickness spreads across the land. When three Gelflings uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the fires of rebellion are lit and an epic battle for the planet begins.

Netflix fantasy series “Age of Resistance” will launch in 2019
Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nathalie Emmanuel are set to lead the voice cast for “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” the 10-episode animated fantasy series that’s a prequel to Jim Henson’s 1982 fantasy film.
Egerton, Taylor-Joy and Emmanuel will play the three Gelfing heroes, Rian, Brea and Deet. Netflix additionally announced Monday the cast voicing of other puppet characters in a staggering list that includes: Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham-Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Jey, ?”lafur Darri ?”lafsson, Simon Pegg, Andy Samberg and Donna Kimball.
Additional characters will also be voiced by puppeteers from the production, including Alice Dinnean, Louise Gold, Neil Sterenberg and Victor Yerrid, with more to be announced soon.

“It is thrilling to see this assembled team of artists, puppeteers and now voice actors, many inspired by my father’s original film, work together to realize this unique world – through performance and craft – at a scale that is rarely seen today,” she added.
“The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” will launch on Netflix in 2019.

Here’s a fun first teaser trailer for family animation movie Playmobil: The Movie, featuring the voices of Anya Taylor-Joy, Jim Gaffigan, Gabriel Bateman, Adam Lambert, Kenan Thompson, Meghan Trainor and Daniel Radcliffe. Trainor and Lambert are also singing original songs for the film.
The animation-live action hybrid movie, based on the popular kids toy line, is due out next year. The film will follow the adventures of siblings Charlie (Bateman) and Marla (Taylor-Joy). When the former unexpectedly disappears into the animated universe of Playmobil, Marla must go on a quest to bring him home. During her adventures she teams up with some unlikely new friends, including smooth-talking food truck driver Del (Gaffigan), dashing and charismatic secret agent Rex Dasher (Radcliffe), a wholehearted misfit robot and an extravagant fairy-godmother (Trainor). Lambert will voice the character of villain Emperor Maximus.
Director and story creator is Disney veteran Lino DiSalvo, who served as head of animation on Frozen and was animation supervisor on Tangled and Bolt. Script is from Blaise Hemingway, Greg Erb and Jason Oremland and head of animation is Julien Bocabeille, animator on The Boss Baby and Kung Fu Panda 3. Producers are Aton Soumache, Dimitri Rassam, Emmanuel Jacomet, Alexis Vonarb and Oliver Stone regular Moritz Borman. The same producers all previously worked on animated pic The Little Prince.
Lionsgate handles world sales. A number of deals have already closed including to Studiocanal in the UK, Tele München Group in Germany and DMG Entertainment in China. Pathe will release in France.

The Witch and Split‘s Anya Taylor-Joy has joined the cast of Peaky Blinders‘ fifth season. BBC One, where the Steven Knight-created epic crime saga is moving after spending its first four go-rounds on BBC Two, tweeted the news today, welcoming Taylor-Joy to Birmingham. There’s no word yet on just what her role will be, but the actress tells Deadline, “I could not possibly be more excited to be joining such a talented group of people. I can’t wait to get in and play this character.”
The BBC released a first-look photo of Taylor-Joy, taken by Season 5 director Anthony Byrne on the set of the drama that’s currently filming in Manchester (check it out below). Further cast is expected to be added to the 2018 laureate of the Best TV Drama BAFTA Award.
Deadline recently reported that Season 5 will see Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby face his darkest force yet. As the world is thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929, opportunity and misfortune are everywhere. When Tommy, who’s now an MP, is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realizes that his response will affect not just his family’s future but that of the entire nation.
Helen McCrory and Paul Anderson are also back for Season 5 as are Sophie Rundle, Finn Cole, Kate Phillips, Natasha O’Keefe, Aidan Gillen, Jack Rowan, Charlie Murphy, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Harry Kirton, Packy Lee, Ned Dennehy, Ian Peck and Benjamin Zephaniah.
Taylor-Joy was recently seen in BBC/Masterpiece mini The Miniaturist and her upcoming feature projects include M Night Shyamalan’s Glass and X-Men film The New Mutants. She’s repped by CAA, Troika, and Felker Toczek.
Peaky Blinders is written by Knight and produced by Caryn Mandabach Productions and Tiger Aspect Drama. Season 5 will air next year.

Quick question that Anya Taylor-Joy and I are dying to know the answer to: Who, in their perverted wisdom, was the first person to wear red lipstick? Which God-fearing person thought, You know what would be cool? If we painted our mouths bright red — really dialed up the pigment 5,000 percent so that you could see our lips from a great distance!
Cursory Internet searches tell me that it could have been the ancient Sumerians, or the Egyptians, or the Romans, but none of this is satisfying enough. Was it for glamour? Intrigue? Sex? A really good going-out look?
“Dude, I think about that stuff all the time!” Taylor-Joy says breathlessly. We are just wrapping up our interview when we stumble upon the topic we both want to talk about forever. “The ‘first people’ question gets me. Who was the first person to decide that pasta would be fun if it was tubular? And coated in butter? That person’s a genius. Who cut up an avocado and was like, I’m going to eat this green stuff on the inside?”
I wonder aloud: Who decided eyelids should be blue? She laughs. “I think we should bring blue eye shadow back.” She is kidding — and the beauty director of this magazine later informs me that it is already back, so her point is actually moot.
But Taylor-Joy suggests it in a kind of conspiratorial way that is partly whimsical and partly illicit, and in that moment I think, Absolutely, let’s do this new thing you just thought of. This is a woman who only started acting in movies four years ago (at age 18), whose second film was a critical hit (The Witch), whose fifth was a financial success and a critical hit (M. Night Shyamalan’s Split), and whose Marvel movie debuts next year (it’s X-Men, The New Mutants, and she gets top billing). That last one just might catapult her into the celebrity stratosphere, which is both exhilarating and anxiety-inducing for her. Now, in the period before her star crystallizes, she can do anything she wants.
Universal impressed the nation’s exhibitors Wednesday with the first footage of M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller “Glass,” starring Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, James McAvoy and Sarah Paulson.
Shyamalan told the audience at CinemaCon at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas that “Glass” is the “first truly grounded comic book movie.”
Jackson added, “It’s about time I got the title role in my own motherf—ing movie.”
All four stars appeared on the stage, and the footage set up Paulson as a psychologist dealing with the three other characters, who she notes all believe that they are superheroes. What followed was a series of scenes with the characters interacting with each other — with Willis’ character attempting to stop an apocalyptic outcome.
“Glass” brings together the narratives of Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable,” which was released in 2000 through Disney, and last year’s “Split,” from Universal. Shyamalan is self-financing. Universal, Blumhouse and Shyamalan first unveiled plans for “Glass” last year.
From “Unbreakable,” Willis returns as David Dunn and Jackson is back as Elijah Price, best known by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from “Split” are McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy, the only captive to survive an encounter with McAvoy’s the Beast.
Universal will handle domestic distribution, while Buena Vista International is on board for international territories. “Glass” opens domestically on Jan. 18.
